Things to do in Washington DC?

My husband gets leave in August and we are going home to where I'm from in Western Maryland. I wanted to take my husband to DC because he's never been (he's from california). I wanted to know what are some not so pricey things to do, free things to do, favorite places to see, and favorite places to eat that aren't over priced. Thanks so much to anyone that helps me! :)
